Therapy in a group setting can be a productive and supportive way to address common concerns. Students meet as a group with one or more clinicians to explore a specific topic and develop coping skills. Some groups are time limited, while others are ongoing. Group offerings vary each semester and lists are updated at the beginning of the semester. Additional groups may be developed, depending on student interest and staff availability.
Get started: If you are currently meeting with a UH&CS counselor, speak to them directly about a referral to group. If you are not already seeing a UH&CS counselor, stop by our office in 220 Sears Library for a walk-in appointment to establish care and to learn more about our groups. This group is for students with social anxiety and other social impairments who would like help navigating and connecting to the University campus and community. Topics covered include identifying campus resources, initiating and sustaining healthy relationships, transitioning to residence hall living, learning about campus clubs/organizations, and becoming more independent. Have you struggled to remain in school because of personal or mental health concerns? Have you had to take time off from school in order to seek treatment? This group is for students who are trying to stay on track academically while also taking care of their emotional, psychological, and mental healthcare needs. Group members offer support and encouragement to each other, share their successes, and address emerging stressors and concerns before they become overwhelming and unmanageable.
Grief Support Group
This ongoing group is designed for students who have experienced the death of a loved one. It is a process-oriented group that invites members to share their feelings of grief and to be supported by other students who have experienced similar losses. It is intended to help break the isolation of grief and provide meaningful tools for coping. Students interested in attending will be invited to an individual one-time session with the group facilitator to discuss the group in further detail and to determine if the group is a good fit.
Hot Mess Express
Need to regulate your sleep schedule? Struggling with procrastination? Difficulty creating a work-life balance? Get back on track with the Hot Mess Express. Attendees of this 10-week Executive Functioning Group will gain an understanding of how their brain works and receive practical approaches regarding positive self-care, sticking with tasks, improving focus and attention, and much more! In the Company of My Sisters
The focus of this group is on creating a safe space for women of color to support one another, connect over experiences of discrimination, oppression, racism, and gain wisdom and energy from each in a safe, supportive, and confidential space. This group is open to anyone identifying as a women of color, and will be held in the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
Interpersonal Process Group
This group is for students who want to better understand themselves and their relationships with others. Participants identify specific goals they want to achieve to improve their social lives, such as managing conflicts, communicating directly and assertively, making connections with new acquaintances, coping with loneliness, improving trust in others, increasing self-esteem, and establishing interpersonal boundaries.
Each member of the group has the opportunity to ask for feedback on their own goals, as well as to offer feedback to other members. Rather than focusing on the past, this group seeks to cultivate a supportive, here-and-now environment to foster healthy self-concepts and social skills.
LGBTQ+ Therapy Group
Students across marginalized sexual and romantic orientations, gender identities and expressions are invited to this group, which is intended as a safe place for support. Feel free to bring topics to process with the group, such as coping with discrimination and oppression, coming out to family and friends, intersections of identity, or supporting an authentic sense of self in the face of social expectations. Whether you're questioning your identity or have been out as LGBTQIA+ for a long time, you are welcome.
Men of Color Group
The focus of this group is on creating a non-judgmental safe space for men of color to support one another, connect over experiences of discrimination, oppression, racism, and gain wisdom and energy from each in a safe, supportive and confidential space. This group is a space so participants can feel free to express their authentic selves and explore "progressive" masculinity. This support group is offered for students who self-identify as male. The Men of Color Group meets in the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
Mood and Food
Mood and Food is a semi-structured group for students who are currently recovering from an eating disorder, have mood dependent eating and/or disordered eating, and struggle with their relationship with food and their bodies. Group members will have a space to gain support from other students regarding their own experiences, as well as a chance to focus on their own personal goals. Each group will also include a focus on learning skills to help manage thoughts, feelings, urges, and behaviors associated with eating and body image issues.
Motivated to Moderate
This group is for students who are concerned about their use of alcohol and/or various other substances. It is a non-abstinence based group, which means it is not required that group members want to stop using, but must acknowledge that their substance use plays a role in their lives. We will explore ways alcohol and drug use may be interfering with personal goals, relationships, etc. Students will set personal goals and work towards making changes that are meaningful to them.
Learn how to MOVE from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset, while realizing your personal values and creating life goals. MOVE toward a life that matters to you! Must commit to three (3) consecutive weeks of the group.
Partners of Medical School Students
This informal group is for spouses and partners of students that attend Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, Lerner Medical School, CWRU School of Dental Medicine, and the Kent State College of Podiatric Medicine. Participants meet regularly to share experiences and to support each other in a comfortable social atmosphere.
Resilience Enhancement Group
The group is for students who are interested in changing patterns of behavior that are no longer helpful. Here you will learn skills to effectively manage stress, anxiety, and other distressing emotions through an approach based in mindfulness that balances self-acceptance with change. Distress, emotional pain, interpersonal difficulties, and behavioral problems such as over- or under-eating, using substances, self-injuring, losing control, or "using-up" relationships can make it incredibly difficult to function. In this group, we target the issues that cause distress and promote coping skills that can be used in place of previously established self-defeating behaviors within a framework of acceptance - we are doing the best we can, even though we may need to learn ways that work better.
Support Group for Women Earning PhDs
This support group is offered for students who identify as female and want to come together to explore and process the challenges and struggles of being a in a PhD program. Here we discuss ways to balance school and personal life; manage relationships with advisors and peers; and improving self-confidence and self-efficacy.
Support for Supporters
This group is for students who grew up in households where chronic illness, mental illness, addiction or other sorts of dysfunction played a shaping role in how they view themselves and the world. Students in this group learn new patterns of relating, healthy boundary setting, and improve their sense of self-worth.
Stress Management Group
A moderate amount of stress is customary for most of us, including undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. However, when daily stress accumulates beyond your personal threshold, it can lead to a harmful state of chronic anxiety. Learn how to manage your stress in a healthy way using mindfulness meditation, cognitive-behavioral strategies, and group support. Identify your personal goals for wellness and stress-reduction, and use the group to keep you on track.
Trans and Gender-Nonconforming Group
This new group is for students who identify as trans or gender nonconforming who feel that their needs would be best met in a group with others who share that aspect of their identity.
This group is for students who are experiencing difficulties as a result of gender-based violence. The group aims to combine psychoeducation and support in order to develop effective coping strategies, improve interpersonal relationships and instill a sense of safety while managing trauma related symptoms.
